Single Beetle Wing Drop Earrings
Asian wood–boring ‘jewel beetles’ (Sternocera aequistignata) have a short life span of 3 to 4 weeks in their adult stage, having laid their eggs they die off. Only those that die of natural causes are collected and the wings are removed. The wings have an iridescent green and blueish surface and shine like emeralds, hence also called ‘jewel beetles’.
How are they made? The wings are steamed for five minutes to soften them, and then, using a sharp needle, holes are pierced at the tips. A great sustainable alternative to plastic sequins and beads.
The shiny appearance of the beetle wings is long-lasting. They are surprisingly durable if handled with care.
We have used these beautiful seeds in very simple designs using sterling silver ear hooks to enhance the wings. We then wrap and present your Single Beetle Wing Drop Earrings using recycled packaging.
Each wing is approx 1 inch in length.
On sterling silver ear hooks. ‘925’ stamped on side of the hooks
